It would be remiss not to mention that it is safer for BOTH parties during menstrual periods to use a condom. Once employed, there is virtually no difference in risk, unless the condom breaks, etc.

However, without a condom, there is indeed a slightly elevated risk during menstruation of transferring any sexually transmissible diseases due to the "raw", or more permeable, nature of the female's tissues, and the last time I checked, there was no real cure for H.I.V./A.I.D.S., genital herpes, or even for human papillomavirus, according to some experts.

Besides being incurable, another good reason to avoid HPV and herpes simplex virus, is that HIV tends to piggyback on them.

Needless to say, oral sex is also a greater risk to both parties during the woman's period, if her partner has gum disease.

It should be noted that gum disease is considered to be the second most common disease on the planet, and that probably every other person in the United States has it, at least to some degree, though they may not know it!

It's a very personal thing. Some women don't feel very sexy during their period. Others have cramps and it just hurts, no matter what you say about how "natural" it is.

You have to respect that as a man. And not take it personally or read too much into it. Or jump on her every time she's bleeding just to prove something (mostly to yourself). Respect her feelings, above all else.

It's hard to believe this is such a big deal for people. Granted, I often look like Hannibal Lecter after going down on my wife on a heavy day, but it certainly doesn't detract from my fun.

A literary note: In one of Erica Jong's sequels to Fear of Flying, her lover pulls her tampon out with his teeth [which I've done], then proceeds to chew it so the blood runs down his chin [which I haven't, but if I thought it would turn my wife on...]

I like it fine. It washes off easily. However, it has bothered a couple of women I've known. AND despite great efforts on my part to convince them otherwise, I could not change their minds. FYI, one had painful periods, either cramps and/or headaches, and the other did not like her own smell.

'Period' sex has never bothered me - I don't understand all the fuss. I think it is another aspect of trust and intimacy. Yes, it feels different - 'thicker', as Aphrodite says.
I once had a gf who would always clean me up afterwards which was wonderful.
I had another gf who hated the mess. She would somehow manage to push a tampon deep inside and then let me partially enter her, using her hand to stop me getting too far in. It was quite different but good. I was always worried that the tampon would get stuck but she said it was easy to get out.
Glad you are now a contibutor Aphrodite - you have interesting things to say.
