For a first-time vibe, I’d go for something small. Some notes:

1. Avoid the straight smooth vibes for inserting. Without texture or some kind of bend, they are pretty lame for insertion and the vibration isn’t strong enough for clitoral orgasms.

2. Avoid any insertable that has the controls on the end of the phallus. You want a wire going from the phallus to the controls so you can change the intensity without needing a mirror.

3. The book “Sex for One” recommends shaping vegetables into various shapes for inserting to see what you like before you buy. Put a condom over it though!

4. Some women swear by the rabbit style vibes. Others (like me) think the bullet style is best. I don’t think there’s any way to tell which will work better for you without trying them both, so go ahead and get both!

5. High intensity is good to have as an option, but make sure anything you get has multiple settings. Too much vibration can HURT! :O

6. Use lube! Especially when you’re putting something on the clit.

7. The Cottonelle moist wipes that they sell on the toilet paper aisle are great for cleanup. If you don’t already have a g-spot wand, this is a must-get. Or bettter yet, get a guy who you really dig to get in there and strum your g-spot strings. I looove sex toys: here are my favorites.

The Hitachi: the strongest (2 speeds, unless they’ve been updated), plugs in and will vibrate you to numbness if you use it too much…but I ADORE it. I like the waterproof rechargeable infrared vibrator (the Alabama Slammer when Good Vibrations has it in stock) - it’s hard red plastic (7.25″ by 1.25″) and the tip lights up and heats up (warm, not hot), which feels really good. The tip is not seamless as some sites claim, though. Using the light uses the charge up faster, but I like that it’s rechargeable.

If you’re getting a dildo, make sure it’s silicone. Rubber smells, breaks down, and is harder to clean.

Actually, my girl recomends a bullet vibrator to women that havn’t bought vibrators before (she’s a sex toy party consultant).

And you can use it in a lot of ways with a partner as well as without a partner. (if you get the chance to, in the vagina while having vaginal sex is really really interesting for both people).

I disagree with Horatio. While the Hitachi Magic Wand is possibly the best vibrator on the market, it is very large, expensive, and noisy. I would not recommend it as a first time purchase. I WOULD highly recommend the Pocket Rocket, or the waterproof version, the Water Dancer. It is small (4″), powerful, much cheaper ($30 instead of $50), pretty quiet, and the battery lasts for a long time. If you read any reviews of it, you’ll find that it’s universally accepted as one of the best vibrators ever, and most owners have had the same one for years. Good luck!

Vibrating butt plugs are nice and I don’t really have a preference. The boyfriend seems to enjoy his a great deal.

The very amicable Hitachi Magic Wand may be large and noisy, but it’s durable and worth the money spent.

The X-10 anal beads are nice. For men and women.

I’ll have to dig through the rest of the toys and give you some reviews as I go…
