I was contrasting these Amazons to their nearest analog in popular culture, which is the body-builder women who are mostly starved, steroid-soaked, bulging-veined, testosterone-ravaged parodies of people. Whatever that’s all about, it’s surely not self-defense; it’s a form of extreme body modification that’s not, to my eye, attractive.
Barry, that’s too strong a claim. One of the early legends of Amazon warriors said that they were women who had removed a breast to allow for better archery … but in popular usage, the word has come to mean simply fierce female warriors, or even just strong, powerful, combative women of any kind.
