One such incident occurred in March 1784, when the Duchess of Devonshire kissed a butcher in exchange for the butchers' vote for opposition (Whig) candidate Charles James Fox.  It was significant in this election because the Whigs won.

Ironically, I ran across mention of this scandal while reading last night.  It caught my attention because of your entry!

		<description>I dunno... but getting a mouthful of saliva from the governer of California doesn't sound all that appealing to me. =\

Maybe it's a form of ego-vampirism? By kissing, the kisser flatters the kissed, implying a sort of gracious superiority? A way to reinforce loyalty amongst the devout by demonstrating they are worthy of the leaders affection?

Or maybe in acneint Roman times being affectionate with any and all was a sign of open-mindedness, or some other desirable trait in a leader.</description>
