Gardening in the nude, or pretty near nude, was common back in Jesus' time. Peasants didn't have a lot of spare clothes; to keep what they had clean, they'd leave it in the hovel, weather permitting.

I once heard a British theologian speculating that in the New Testament story of the Resurrection, when Mary Magdalene sees Jesus standing near the tomb and mistakes him for a gardener, it's because he was naked. Though some traditions insist that Mary Magdalene would have recognized Jesus perfectly well with his clothes off . . . . Anyway, naked in the garden is an image that takes us all the way back to Adam and Eve -- a very fitting thing.

There were more saddening things in my family than that, I can assure you. All told, we were a pretty repressed crew when I was growing up -- which was pretty normal for American families of the era, if you weren't named "Leaf" and living in a hogan.
