I thought Polar Bear Clubs were groups of winter swimmers, that you had to go daily or weekly. At least where I was raised up North it was like that. I used to go swim daily in the ocean off a pier. You'd jump in and swim back and forth between the 2 piers. There were probably about 3 dozen people, all male and mostly older men. My buddy and I were the only youngsters. To call yourself a member, you had to go 3 times a week all winter. Of course, that was back in the day when you could swim nude at the YMCA. Lots of us did back then. I'm not sure whether there was a term for the folks who dove in on New Years Day to "cure the hangover." The Russian and Greek Orthodox in town would have their young (single) men drive for a cross on Jan. 3rd, the day of the blessing of the waters, regardless of the temperature and weather.
