Whoops, you are right. The image of the resurrected Osiris has a green or black face. My thought was that this picture showed him just about to be resurrected so his face color was still the normal brown. Another thought that came back to me was that in ancient Egyptian religion the pharaoh "becomes" Osiris when he dies. This image could then represent a pharaoh as Osiris and his queen as Isis. However, the mummy is not wearing either the pharaoh's crown of Upper Egypt, the crown of Lower Egypt, or the double crown that was used when the kingdom was unified. The headdress the mummy has on is pretty elborate though so he could be a part of the royal family (maybe a brother). I can't read the heiroglyphs so I can't tell you for sure. Names are usually written inside a cartouche and I don't see one so the symbols are probably not a name.

That is an image of Osiris, Isis and Anubis. That isn't Osiris' hand above Isis' head, it's her hand. She is performing a mourning gesture. You can see her other hand wrapped around his butt. The slanted line under her eye is a tear streak. Yes, in reality the position would be physically awkward but the mummy of Osiris is the more important element in the picture so that is why it looks like it does. As for why she is blowing him? Osiris was killed by his brother Set and cut into pieces. Osiris' sister/wife Isis found all of the pieces except his penis and put him back together. She made a substitute penis out of clay and attached it to him. She then blew life back into him by (strange but true) blowing him. Osiris was a fertility figure in ancient Egypt as well as a resurrection figure and is often depicted with an erect penis. Hope this helps.

Do you have the full picture including the hieroglyphs? I might decipher that and then we'll know for sure what is happening here.

That's the classic "waking up Osiris" position. I highly recommend it!

It's very probably Isis, Osiris and Anubis.
Set (Osiris's evil brother) hacked Osiris to
pieces and threw them in the Nile. Isis
recovered the parts and bandaged them together.
She them brought him back to life. Not through
CPR, but BJ. The illustration is supposed to
be from the Book of the Dead, but the copy
displayed in the Field Museum must be censored.
Thanks for posting it!

It looks to me as though she's at a college party and was in the middle of taking a toke from some very elaborate bong when, just in time, the R.A. walked in and snagged the pipe from her lips.

Actually, I'm fairly certain that it was Osiris who was res-erected, not Horace.
