I’d say you’re not only quite observant, but also likely correct. Peter Fendi had a series of about forty colored erotic lithographs that were created for a wealthy patron, and Fendi was wont to depict acrobatics, contortionists, and gymnasts…

This one is likely a trapeze artist, but my memory isn’t photographic…

I’d strongly agree that circumcision’s popularity has a lot to do with your country of origin. I was amazed when I found out that circumcision is very common in America.

(That info came from the telly, so correct me if it’s an inaccurate assumption.)

I have never encountered a circumcised penis in Britain. I’ve only ever seen one, and that was a Muslim chap I knew when I lived in France. Circumcision remains mostly a religious practice, and indeed is seen as mutilation by many people.

another detail that might be useful in dating it is the fact that the penis is clearly circumsized. Don’t know when that became popular (of course location will have a lot to do with that, too, and we don’t know where the picture is from for sure either.)

Oilyrags, according to Google the artist Fendi lived between 1796-1842, so if Fendi is indeed the artist of this piece, your 1930s date based on style points would seem unlikely. Perhaps he was ahead of his time…

I’d say it’s much more recent than 1830s, probably more like 1930s based on the use of outlines, the hairstyle, and the approach to color. Never heard of Fendi outside the context of designer purses, though, so grain of salt, etc.

It looks like the woman is suspended, hanging upside down or something … she’s wearing a corset, and those things don’t bend, but her torso is depicted going straight up …. puzzling.
