Oprah got working class woman reading. And that spilled over to others. This was a major cultural accomplishment.

Oprah Winfrey is an icon of female empowerment. Her message to females young and old is to take hold of one's life and own it. I don't think that's a bad thing.

"Chromeman" has made a very astute observation. The Venus of Willendorf is one of the first known created images of a human. Any classically trained artist would have studied the image in art history class, therefore it was probably inspirational in the Oprah image... especially if one notes the treatment of the hair. It also looks a bit like several other famous carvings, the Venus of Lespugue seen here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Venus_de_Lespugue_%28replica%29.jpg
the Vénus gravettienne de Savignano, seen here:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Savignano_face.jpg
and the Ishtar/Inanna/Ashtart breast-offering carving, now in the Louvre Museum in Paris.

Note to alex99a - Heres my take: Oprah began to make real money when the networks realized she commanded the coveted "soap opera" audience, consisting of ostensibly lonely unemployed housewives. Advertisers love an audience who is easily led, and Oprah had demonstrated that when she recommended a course of action to her troops, they would follow. Her "Book Club" reviews of books virtually guaranteed best-seller status. Advertisers so wanted to reach these easily influenced women (who controlled the proverbial purse strings), that they were willing to pay her inflated rates to advertise on her show. Oprah confessed that she was a victim of sexual abuse by an uncle, a cousin, and a friend of the family starting at the age of nine, and Oprah's earlier shows often consisted of a good bit of male-bashing, which her nearly all-female audience (3 out of 4) ate up with a spoon. In fact, once a woman in her audience made a derogatory comment about gays, and her response inspired an uproarious, screaming, standing ovation: "You know what I'm tired of", replied Winfrey, "heterosexual males raping and sodomizing young girls. That's what I'm tired of." Oprah's pandering paid off, and now her loyal audience has grown along with her (and her fortune, now over 2.5 billion), and she has cut back on the male bashing of yore.

I think it's gorgeous too, but I'd bet my next paycheck that you're right, Eve, Oprah and lots of other people will focus on its curviness and see "fat" instead of "real woman." I think our culture is too used to seeing Photoshopped celebs that are sticks before the pixels get sliced away.

That's so beautiful. Sadly, my first thought was that she would see it and think she looked fat. :(

I've always heard you'd hardly recognize her without her make-up...
(I'm guessing she didn't pose for it...)
