Bacchus is spot-on about the differing attitudes. Sex scandals involving government officials are merely a commonplace amusing diversion. All one has to do is watch one of those “world’s funniest commercials” shows on cable tv, and see that in Europe, pretty much anything goes as long as it’s funny. Even the “stuffy” Brits have racier sitcoms… (and what U.S. newspaper would ever have “page three” girls?). Also I might add, the coastal areas are rife with nude beaches! In fact, in some areas, spouses are practically expected to have other lovers that they see on a regular basis.

C.B., I’m going to speculate that you haven’t spent that much time in Europe. There is a distinct relaxed attitude about nudity and sexuality there that — although it is not universal by any means — is a sharp and vivid contrast to the way things are done in the U.S.

Whether it’s fair to attribute our relative prudery to the Puritans, precisely, I cannot say, not as a matter of history. But the fact of difference between U.S. and European attitudes is not really disputable.

Kind of a comment on the comment (Bacchus’s)…

I’ve been wondering lately, in America are we really (I mean, really?) Puritanical at all anymore? I would be quite interested in reading anything that takes a detached yet thorough look at what is actually left of Puritanical influence, vs. the years of immigration and other influences on our culture.

Well, over on Bondage Blog they are saying the promo shoot was filmed in Budapest. My experience of Eastern Europe is that it’s (a) more sexually permissive than we are used to; (b) freer about street behavior than in Puritan America, and (c) really badly policed. I’m just guessing, but I’d assume they had the services of a local, politically connected operator, who gets a shooting permit from the local authorities (for a fee) and hires a few local security guards (for a fee) to keep the public well away from the shooting space of the raunchier (fucking) bits. Then when the cops show up, you show them the permit, they say it’s no good, you argue and wave your arms, they say they’re arresting everybody, they put the local guy in the car to “check the documents”, he gives them a nice bribe or “pays the fine right here”, they announce all is in order, he gets out of the car, they go away happy, you re-commence shooting.

Just my guess, but that’s often how things go in that part of the world. (Note that it may go just the same for shooting a bubble-gum commercial.)

I imagine that there’s also the usual tricks for shooting porn in public; you pick odd hours when the street is quiet, you use crew to keep the pedestrians well away from the raunchier bits, you maybe use a few ringer “extras” to put in the shots who are not, in fact, the public; you choose neighborhoods where people will be amused rather than offended — and that’s just my skeptical outsider’s view, I’m sure there are plenty more tricks.

I don’t know how to fully express how much I love this. My deepest, darkest fantasies come true. But I can’t help but wonder … how do they not get arrested for public indecency or something along those lines?
