This is the vintage photo of Michiko Maeda in the 1950s movie entitled THE REVENGE OF THE PEARL QUEEN.

She has the distinction of being the first Japanese actress to appear both topless and nude in a Japanese movie.

I remember seeing, sometime in the late 1960s a documentary film on the Japanese pearl industry, which had fairly long sequences of women divers enitely au naturel, wearing not even diving masks.

This, surprisingly, was a public screening in a cinema hall in my home country, India, where censorship of female nudity was (and still is) very strict.

Judging from the title, I’d say Girl Divers
of Spook Mansion did not make anyone’s top
ten list. ;) Unfortunately, there is no mention
of it in Japanese Sex Cinema: The Sex Films
by Thomas and Yuko Mihara Weisser.

Probably the closest American equivalent would
be something like The Mermaids of Tiburon,
which was released in various versions.

It’s a shame there’s no real equivalent to that in American culture. I mean, topless what? Coal miners? Wood-cutters?
