I'm not offended, I didn't see your "lightheartedness." Hasn't "bastard" been a slur and synonym for "illegitimate child" for centuries? What's lighthearted about that?

I'm sorry, Aphrodite, I did not mean my lightheartedness to offend. Your exception to the word bastard (the word of choice, I believe, in 1656) only underlines my point. Extra-marital children are much touchier than extra-marital affairs. In the modern world there is a much greater distance between those two than there once was. I certainly never implied that a piece of paper makes a baby (or marriage) better.

Maybe you're not as far out of 1956 as you think. Seriously, "father bastards"? A piece of paper doesn't make one baby better than another.

If I am the first to comment, I would like to point out that male marital jealousy has changed a lot since 1656, at least since 1956. Birth control and nigh-flawless paternity testing have seriously eroded any justification for such jealousy. As have longer lifespans. If my wife cuckolds me I can just take the children into my heart, and be patient. I'll father bastards of my own in twenty years when she's a crone; last laugh.
