Thanks for pointing that out to me; I was so quick to point out one type of bigotry that I got caught up in it myself. I guess the attitude of the military commanders a tad upsetting.

Thanks for responding to my comment.

Lisi, fair points made in your post, but I'm not sure what is demonstrated by the "authoritative" quote except that the retired CIA operative who gave it has misogynistic attitudes -- surely not a surprising situation?

What caught my eye about that quote was how laughably similar it was to the lines in the email spams that flood my inbox daily, which are chock full of ludicrous force metaphors -- "Forge your new love sword" being the new one just today.

In general and in the abstract, drugs like Viagra give men the choice whether to have an erection, a choice they may not otherwise have; speaking as a man, I'm not inclined to condemn that as a bad thing. You give a man that choice, you've done him a good deed, pretty much every time. This is true regardless of whether he's a rapist or a caring and sensitive lover. You pretty much need to know the man -- individually -- before you can even begin to guess about the morality of doing him that particular good deed.

I'm pretty uncomfortable with any argument that assumes the likelihood of rape among abstract populations in foreign cultures. I don't know much about Afghanistan, but I do now what cultural bigotry smells like, and my smeller is twitching.

bacchus, this post makes me uncomfortable for a number of reasons outlined here... http://www.feministe.us/blog/archives/2008/12/27/cia-uses-viagra-as-bribing-tactic-in-afghanistan/

In a world where women have a right to who they have sex with, we can often forget what kind of problems "soft diplomacy" might cause.

Four pills that could be manufactured for about $4 and we made a friend. Imagine what giving his village $400 for medicine might accomplish. Why, then, is our usual plan to offer violence for violence? Perhaps a little preemptive help might achieve better results?

When John Lennon wrote and sang the song "Mind Games", he called for us to "make love, not war" at the very end. Words from a song that he originally began in 1969. Who would have ever thought the C.I.A. would be pushing those sentiments four decades later...

This proves the old saying in a new way. "Get them by the balls and their hearts and minds will follow," indeed.
