Faun And Happy Girl
So the faun said to the naked girl “Why don’t you sit on my lap, and we’ll see what pops up.”
She seems very pleased with the results. So I’m not going to worry about why that thing looks like a tongue…
The artist is Hungarian Pál Szinyei Merse.

His penis looks like a tongue, because it’s very common for an animal’s organ be shaped like that.
As a bit of a student of art history, I’m quite intrigued however with not only its depiction, but the explicit portrayal of the vagina as well. This is extremely rare for a painting by an author of his stature in that time period.
I’m guessing it was made for his own private enjoyment or that of a close friend. I doubt that it was shown in general public. Do you know if it was?…
The faun was commonly drawn as half man, half goat. But I don’t know what goat penis looks like, and am not curious enough to google it.
Sadly I do not know anything about the display history of this piece; I got the artist attribution from the file name and was able to confirm it to my satisfaction with Google, but didn’t learn anything useful about this particular artwork in the process.
Not surprisingly, it looks not unlike a goat penis.
I didn’t mean to sound like I was questioning the authenticity of the artist. The mastery of the medium speaks for itself, and besides, the styles match. I’m not shocked and in disbelief, I’m shocked because I believe in its authenticity. I’m just in awe that this guy committed the materials necessary for it’s creation.
Artists like Fragonard may have created titillating soft-core images, and artists like Rowlandson may have made explicit cartoon-like illustrations, but THIS is quite a find! I have to assume that this is an oil painting, made with all of the care and attention that he reserved for his more well-known works.
I’m thinking that a work of this nature might find its way into a secret sex club for the wealthy, like the one Kubrick tried to expose in his last movie (“Eyes Wide Shut”, that the censors cut up until you couldn’t follow its importance). After all, the painter of the faun above WAS a politician as well…
I’ll bet it has a colorful history, I hope someone out there knows it, and will share.

It’s just, this is one of those places where the veneer of globalization is scratched and shows itself to be thin. All the (few) web resources are in Bulgarian, the Wikipedia about this artist/politician is a stub, and there just isn’t much about this guy for an English-speaker to discover.
What’s great about the internets is that sometimes that one person who does both know and speak our language will show up. {drums fingers impatiently}
That’s an unusual take – logigal but not common, most depictions i know give him a human looking penis, in spite of being attached to a goat abdomen
Using “Google translate”, I was able to find a Hungarian site that basically said that while in art school, at age 22, he and a buddy (painter Max Gabriel) had a contest as to who could paint the most (or the most risque`) number of sexy paintings with their own likeness appearing on the canvas. This painting was auctioned in modern times with a starting price of 22 million dollars. I can’t find whether it sold for more or less…
I’d love to know where it has been over the last 150 years…
