Definitely an unfitting. Observe the clothing tossed on the floor, not to mention the otherwise-gratuitous toplessness.
It must be nice to live in a world where ambiguous clues that tell a dozen different stories resolve into a “definitely” on command. There are always too many conflicting stories in my head for certitude…
I can’t place it for certain, but I’m fairly certain that the illustrator has drawn some fairly popular fairy tales. I think it may be Arthur Rackham or N.C. Wyeth (father of Andrew Wyeth and grandfather of Jamie Wyeth).

I believe the illustrator is ArtuÅ¡ Scheiner, probably best known for his illustrations of a book called “Fairy Tales for Adults” written by Jean Qui Rit
I was fairly certain it was a fairy tale illustrator. My apologies to the Wyeth family…

…and I believe the tool seen on the floor is a primitive nipper-type bolt cutter or “pliers”, which worked a bit like modern-day nail clippers. Their handles are too short to produce enough leverage to cut through hardened steel (such as a lock hasp), but would have cut softer metals like copper wire, so we’re likely to think they were tossed aside in frustration due to ineffectiveness.
Bacchus, maybe you could get a copy of the book through your “fund me” program, and treat us to other treasures therein, such as a summary of the story the illustration is taken from?
