Blowing Smoke Rings
There’s a lot that I do not know about obsolete smoking technology, but I’ve seen enough examples of artwork featuring women with hookah nozzles in unexpected orifices to have started wondering. Is this just an erotic-art fantasy, or was there an actual smoking practice (perhaps involving something stronger than tobacco) like this in fashionable but dissolute salons?

She is blowing smokerings from her mouth so I assume it is just to keep the pipe somewhere she can find it again when she next takes a drag. It has a long tube and could easily get lost under the couch. I am also assuming hashish which makes life very complicated for the smoker.
Wasn’t tobacco smoke up the bottom a medical remedy back in Victorian times? And certain South American civilizations smoked tobacco through the back door, too. So while I have no idea, I can certainly see there this is coming from. And think of the benefits! No more stained teeth and cigarette breath!

In an item on the TV show QI Stephen Fry explained that bellows filled with burning tobacco were used to blow smoke into the anus/rectum of people rescued from the river Thames as a means of resuscitation.

After seeing the link of commenter John’s recommendation, I’m reminded of the old joke where a man asked his date if she smoked after sex, and she replied, “I don’t know honey, Ive never checked!”
She’s either just keeping the mouth piece warm…or has the strongest kegel muscles ever!
