I spent some student time in the old Soviet Union, back there under Gorbachev, right before it all fell apart. I don’t mind saying I sort of got “imprinted” on Russian women during my time there. It’s not quite a fetish, but all these decades later a Slavic cheekbone and a Russian accent can still turn my head, especially on a bright summer evening when there are short skirts and long legs on display.

A little bit later in life, but still when the internet was young, I somehow got on a mailing list that promised to match up Russian women looking for foreign husbands among men so inclined. Combining cultural differences with long-distance wooing, however, always daunted me too much, and besides I was happily-distracted by American women right where I lived. But I do grasp the appeal of the so-called Russian woman, for all the risks of stereotype that we incur by referring in two words to an entire nation of women. At least I can say this much in safety: the young Russian women that I personally met all had a sort of attractive fierceness. As a stranger you might catch the sharp end of that, as they protected themselves and their friends with sharp tongues and quick scorn and cold shoulders from whatever risk this strange foreign man might pose. But once you got inside the circle and were seen as a friend (or better), these same women would invariably be tender and protective and fiercely loyal. And that was sometimes most pleasant indeed.

With me having such a history, you can see why it triggered some fond memories when I was approached by the folks at Romance Compass to blog about their online Russian dating site. Romance Compass bills itself as dating site that cooperates with Russian and Ukrainian marriage agencies with the goal of finding “your future Russian wife.” The site openly confronts some of the security issues that have plagued similar services in the past:

if a woman wants to place her profile on RomanceCompass.com, she needs to visit our partner’s office and provide a copy of her ID. This way, we make sure that each lady is real and single. This is done due to a number of scammers operating on online dating sites. They create fake profiles and communicate with men with the purpose of coaxing money out of them. Our Anti-Fraud department is always alert. Once they spot suspicious users, they immediately suspend or block them. All these measures help us to be the most scam-free dating site.

Of course I have not actually registered with the site or explored its services; The Nymph knows (too well!) how I feel about Russian women and would, I have no doubt, register some most emphatic objections were I to do that. So if you’re interested in finding marriageable Slavic women, you’ll have to evaluate Romance Compass for yourself to determine how well it meets your needs. But if the profiles are to be relied upon, there’s no shortages of Lyudmillas and Irinas and Alinas and Marinas and Natalias and Linas and Elanas and … you get the idea. Have fun!
