A Reponse To The Haters
I don’t get much of the horrible internet hate directed my way, but I get a little; and of course you can’t be an internet citizen without stepping over cesspits of the stuff every time there’s an un-moderated comment thread somewhere. Here’s a comic response to the haters, a response that only 1.6 million of you saw before I did:
Sexually aggressive racist homophobe misogynistic cowardly illiterate wastes of human skin: this one’s for you!

Based on a lifetime of observances, I have this theory that internet trolls of this sort are likely insecure individuals who feel inadequate or impotent (not necessarily sexually, but quite possibly in this area as well), and suffer from inferiority complexes. They’re inability to express themselves articulately, makes them feel powerless, and they develop explosive personality disorders where they respond with short bursts of vitriol directed at opposing views when others express thoughts that make their brains hurt because it goes against some previously held belief which they can’t logically defend. They waste their time posting hateful comments online, much like the kids who tag public surfaces with spray-can graffiti.
Yeah, I would agree with that. But from my time in the gamer communities, I think it’s simpler in many cases. It’s often younger members of the community who have recently learned the pleasure and seeming power of costless offensive speech.
Children generally feel powerless, which is why a certain sort of toddler starts yelling “Fuck!” in public as soon as they learn the word. Good parenting squelches that sort of behavior fairly fast — making it not costless.
Take that same sense of powerlessness, age it ten years, and give it unsupervised access to a place to spew obnoxious filth. Result is a few people who really enjoy themselves, but they are constantly escalating their spew in search of more/better reactions.
