Fully Protected
You know that annoying javascript some people put on their web pages so that you can’t easily right-click on a photo or link, or select any of the text? I guess it buys protection from dim-witted content thieves who don’t know how to “view source”, but only at the expense of annoying anyone who wants to right click on a link to open it in a new window. And that’s not the only downside to this stupid code.
Three times this week I’ve tried to link to somebody’s sex blog, only to have that idiot javascript kick in when I went to select a key sentence for quoting. And each time, I reacted by clicking away. You don’t want me to copy a sentence from your blog? Fine, I won’t. No problem. No link, either.
The last one I found popped up an error message reading “This blog is FULLY protected!” when I tried to select a sentence. And it is fully protected, too. Protected, in this case, from being put on the ErosBlog sex blog list, and further protected from appearing in the Thursday edition of the Sex Blog Roundup on Fleshbot.

Please stop posting ways I can defeat this laughably bad “copy protection” — I’m fully aware of dozens of ways. That fundamentally misses the point of my rant.
The point is, these people are deliberately breaking the functionality of their little corners of the internet. And shooting themselves in the feet, by pissing off people who would otherwise send them traffic.
Eros, honey, you have to start using Firefox. Porn surfing with any other browser is just nuts.
Didn’t you know that ISP stands for Internet-borne Stultification Plague? It’s a disease that makes you stupid, and you get it from picking your nose after using the mouse of an infected computer.
Now, please donate generously to MonMouth’s ISP RIP ASAP fund – dedicated to making money off the suffering of idiots who don’t want to get linked. The money will go towards Mon’s bar tab – a worthy cause if there ever was one.
I agree – it is annoying when people do that. Still, in this case it was their loss.
And to miss out on a link from Eros Blog or Fleshbot is a pretty big loss.

By definition, anything posted to a webpage is not worth stealing. My photos, writing, and video clips excepted, of course! ;-)

Idiots. There’s a special hell for people who do web sites that way. Flash. Protections. Issues with deep linking. Fuck them. The web concept is all about sharing – if you don’t wanna share it, why the FUCK is it on your web site?

Doxy my dear, I swore I’d delete the next comment telling me to switch browsers. But for you, I’ll make an exception.
I’ve said this over and over again, which is why I grow weary of explaining it:
The thing is, I’m providing a service here. And last time I looked, 75 to 80 percent of my *readers* are using Internet Explorer. The way I see it, I have no choice — I have to use the same browser as my readers, so that I won’t unwittingly send them into popup hell or some such.
I have Firefox installed, and I use it cheerfully whenever Internet Exploder isn’t getting the job done.
But that’s not the point. The point is, whatever browser I use, people shouldn’t be trying to break the functionality of the web. I’m not going to use a smarter tool to thwart their efforts — I’m going to shun them like the selfishly destructive idiots they seem to be.
Well, all the images on my pages are originally mine, from start to finish, and I don’t protect them, or my words, from being used by others because I think people are aware by now that if it’s put out here, it’s free for the taking, but attribution is expected and most often given.
I think people worry too much about intellectual theft. It rarely happens.
Or you could just send them an email and let them know the loopholes.
Color me stupid too.:blush: When I was new at this and put up a bunch of my drawings some paysite dweeb lifted the whole shabang including 4 stories, promptly put his name on them & posted them as his behind a paydoor…

The wonders of user friendly software and this amazing ww web includes the reality that some of us can put up a half decent site with great content and limited technical knowledge. It doesn’t make us enemies of the state ya know :hehe:

Patty, you are right – it probably would be better to try to educate people. But sometimes it feels like trying to bail the ocean with a spoon.
You weren’t and aren’t an idiot, but I do think the person who wrote that javascript in the first place was idiotic to do so. They had enough technical skill, they should have known that they were committing internet vandalism.
Yeah, I understand what you mean about wanting to see what your readers see. But, as a surfer, when you use a browser, shouldn’t it be the browser that gives YOU the options you want to use on YOUR machine? And, if one of your readers writes and complains “hey, you sent us to pop-up hell!” you can always reply “no, IE and the webmaster of site X sent you to pop-up hell.”
I’m a complete Firefox born-again, so I don’t mean to sound like I’m peddling Amway at you, but when the tools are there to improve your enjoyment of something, why not use them? Firefox has an extension that allows you to view a page as it would appear in IE with the click of a button — you could provide your readers the skinny on what they’re missing out on with their slave browsers.
That said, no you shouldn’t have to deal with right-click protection, ten-minute flash introductions, bad 80’s power ballads on midi that start instantly, or any of the other crap egotistical web morons plaster all over their sites — which is all the more reason to take the power they so horridly abuse away from them.

I had no idea that I needed to practice safe blogging.
Doxy, my users trust me. It’s one of the reasons this site is popular. Sure, I could dump them in the deep water and blame their poor choice of survival gear when they drown, but that’s not what I’m doing here. Taking care of my surfers — providing a sexy place on the web that’s *safe* from the predators that prey on the technically ignorant elsewhere in the adult web — is a big part of what I do.
You tech evangelists baffle me. You’ve been more polite than most, which is why I haven’t deleted your suggestions like I usually do, but your contempt (or at least, lack of empathy) for the clueless surfer still shows. Me, I still feel some sorry for them. And more to the point, without them, I wouldn’t have the blog I do. They are an important part of my constituency. I *owe* them.
I’ll be honest — the absolute *biggest* problem I experience using Internet Explorer is the rude comments I have to delete every time the Firefox advocates hear that I’m still using it.
Some people just don’t get the concept of the internet.

Just use a decent browser (like Opera) which gives you control to right click events (And keyboard shortcuts btw).
I downloaded some stupid tracker thing a while back that automatically protected my web page (not that it’s worth protecting ;P ) without me realising it.(truefresco.org)

Doxy, I do (honestly!) appreciate your restraint. I certainly never meant any insult, but I don’t think you realize the history of the contemptuous barrages I get every time this subject comes up. I hope I didn’t read into your comments what wasn’t there, but has been in the last six similar comments.
For me it’s non-negotiable — I can’t do what I see as my job if I don’t see the web the way my surfers see it. I don’t expect other webmasters to feel that way, because they may have other goals. But for me, I don’t have a choice. And I get bloody tired of being told (not by you, but you’re catching the fallout) that I’m a feckless idiot for taking the trouble.

You *so* never saw the first version of my site. I’ve put in my time as the clueless surfer. I started on AOL and I used IE up until a year ago. My “lack of empathy” stems from not being willing to underestimate my surfers, not out of contempt. And while that feels rather insulting, I’ll opt not to take it as such.
There is so much in your last comment that the devil’s advocate in me is chomping to debate, but it’s your pool and your rules so I’ll hush on the topic here.

No frickin’ kidding! I’d just encountered this “protection” yesterday when trying to open a link in a new window…because I LIKED a site I was viewing in a blog xchange and wanted to bookmark it. Now, I hate them. ;)
I”ve started to notice this phenomenon spreading through the blogging world….why do people feel the need to protect their text when all they say is “I did nothing again today” ?!?!?

I did it, and here’s why:
In a nutshell, some thieving c*nt decided that he/she would swipe every single post from my blog and claim it as his/her own. I get e-mails from people asking about their inability to copy my text or perform link commands, but in my case, I thought it very necessary to make it inacessible. Once bitten, and all that.
Avatar, the trouble is that you *didn’t* make it inacessible. The only people who can’t copy your stuff now are clueless to start with.
What you *did* accomplish was to annoy other bloggers who might want to link to you and quote a sentence from one of your posts.
(And, if you care, you also accomplished getting me to pull my link to you, which I did about a week ago when I noticed you’d added the internet-vandalising code to your site.)
I understand that getting copied sucks. But what you’ve done is adopted a “solution” that doesn’t help, and which breaks the internet, and which shoots yourself in the foot (if, like most bloggers, you enjoy beinq quoted and linked to).
Not a smart move in my opinion.

i use a right click code on my site for reasons mentioned above by Avatar. i am also a designer and i try to keep my grafix from the lazy dorks who don’t know any other way (if you know the tricks, it’s yours).
even with that code on my site, i’ve found that a visitor can very easily left click and scroll through any text and “Ctrl C” to copy it.
it’s just the right clicks that get you. try the left scrolls and see if you have better luck.

Mister Radiant, you have missed the point magnificently. And, unlike the people I was railing against who sometimes don’t know any better, you’re tech-savvy enough that you *should* know better.
You’ve just proposed yet another of the dozens of work-arounds available to people who find that their tools don’t work in the normal way — because you deliberately *broke* the normal functionality.
I’m saying: Stop with the frickin’ breakage! It’s pointless and it just pisses people off.
(Plus it reveals you as someone who doesn’t understand why we have an internet.)
