Again, a picture with far-reaching symbolic value (see also Courbet’s titpic below). The man’s neutral expression, like any technician or scientist studying the results of a particular procedure, while the woman’s face expresses some extreme emotion, if only surprise, which he neither feels nor sees. She is certainly feeling something; can he feel anything?
Could it be that his apparent lack of feeling is the point; part of, even a foundation of, the humiliation, the control. If the girls could see if they were pleasing him or not they would manipulate their own behavior, and thereby have some control. Without such cues, all they can do is react to being controlled.
