I won’t go so far as to claim this image (big version here) is before towels precisely, but it does depict the era when they considered a bronze scraper (strigel) superior to a wash rag, for getting clean:

Does anyone know what the symbolism of the fountain means?
A bronze scraper? Ouch! Gimme a loofah any day (or, as Bill O’Reilly calls it, a falafel).
I think the stridgel is more a replacement for a louffa or flannel than a towel.
Actually the comparison made is to a washrag.
I guess it all depends on exactly What you’ve been getting up to, where you’ve been getting up (to) it, and how long since your last bath. Certainly beats spending a fortune on pore-cleansing products.
Strigels were typically used with oil (which made them a lot easier to slide over your skin as one can imagine). I’m not sure a strigel would feel so good with just water!
Looks to me like the lady depicted on the left is holding a sponge. Like an actual natural sponge. It’s giant.
