Since Google has decided ‘most all sex is bad, I wonder how long it will be before threat levels will be assigned to adult content. Someone came up with a graphic for the FCC from way back when, that’s okay for now:

There is a time a place for such content. It is NOT appropriate for children. I want my children to be able to safely and freely research the internet using Google. At age 11 and 8 I don’t want them to stumble across nudity even innocent nudity that may link to less innocent nudity.
I really don’t see why you are making a big deal about it. It is not stifling free speech and adults are fully capable of finding what they need and adjusting the filters to do so.
That’s funny. I like it.
Cami, it’s fine for you to make that decision for your children. What’s not fine is that when your desires for your children interfere with the access that other people want, need, and desire.
I’m making a big deal out of Google’s lazy filtering decisions because they do interfere with the legitimate conversations that adults want to be having on the internet. If you “don’t see” how that’s happening after Tony and I have explained it at length, I don’t suppose there’s much point in repeating the explanations for you. Still, it’s a big deal, and it matters to us.
Umm… If only it also included a high-beams visible through a wet T-shirt level, it would be highly useful for the majority of my searches! Oh… and then there’s the “puppies fighting under a blanket” level for those increasingly popular short video sites that might show girls on trampolines, riding mechanical bulls, or riding galloping horses…
Aw, who are you fooling? It never gets down to
just plain ol’ “sweater”. It’s always going to be “bikini ” or above. :P
Censorship comes down to the parents, not Google. All computers come with parental controls, I do not believe that adults need to be censored b/c the rest of the country can’t control their kids.
Just a thought.
Censorship of any kind is a touchy subject. As an educator I am all for protecting children, but it is far more important that parents teach children to protect themselves. Depending on Google, parental controls or any other agency or institution (including schools) is not only impractical, it’s dangerous.
On a far lighter note I must say that I really like the Breast Threat Advisory System and look forward to days and days of Bikini or higher!
It’s a good business decision. I’m sure google would rather deal with a handful of angry bloggers than a entire nation of pissed off parents when the media runs a story about kids being accidentally exposed to porn through a google search.
