Actually- beer is sometimes used to help the milk supply let down when a mom is nursing. Nowadays people flip out over that suggestion, but it does work! Also, does the baby on the left there have a full beard?
I can’t decide whether it’s better to have an unhappy unbearded baby or a happy one with facial hair. I mean, that’s just kind of creepy.
Oh my goodness, a friend once ribbed me that drinking would “put hair on my chest”, but you know… I do NOT believe this is what they had in mind! *^_^*
I’ve always heard that half of the children in Ireland were weaned on Guinness Beer, and I’ve never really been sure if it was a joke or not…
Stellaluna is right. My mother had a Guiness ration when she had my youngest brother in a British RAF hospital in Germany in 1951 and she didn’t like it, so my Dad got extra. Not sure that helped the milk flow but…
More than for milk let-down. My mother was prescribed a pint of Guinness a day to improve her blood iron levels after I was born. So while the UK National Health Service had some issues with dental care I can’t complain about their post-natal care regimen.
Maybe the mother and child on the right drank a pint of gin instead of lager…..
Actually, in Dicken’s time beer of various strengths was an inportant nutritive, since clean water was a relative rarity. I don’t know if mothers would stick to small-beer (low alcohol content) or move onto the stronger stuff.
