All the old fogies say that flying used to be a lot more fun, and I’m finally starting to believe it:

Speaking of old fogies, you younger kids may appreciate some context to go with that hairstyle.
You-Tube has at least a half a dozen old United Airlines commercial on it, where you are encouraged to come “Fly the Friendly Skies of United”, which had been their motto since 1965, until it was phased out about three decades later.
Commercials with smiling, leggy stewardesses were so popular back then that flying became sexy. By 1969 there was a titillating sexploitation movie in theaters simply titled “The Stewardesses” and a famous “hippie era” poster featured two ducks flying doggie-style, in sexual congress, with the tag line “Fly United”.

National Airlines had a similar campaign known as “Fly Me”, where stewardesses would look into the camera and say things like, “Hi, I’m Suzy. Fly ME to Miami!”
Female airline employees who worked as hostesses or cabin crew, were so heavily sexually harassed by pilots and passengers, that they demanded to be called “flight attendants” due to the connotations of the word “stewardess”, as used by comedians and movie characters of the day. In fact, before their unions worked for change, you could be fired for getting married, gaining weight, or becoming impregnated…
Even so, yes, it was more fun. Stewardesses would look the other way if you brought your own alcohol or wanted to join the “mile high” club on a long flight. Some would even toss you a large roomy blanket…
