I’m guessing from stylistic cues that this vintage catfight photo was one of Irving Klaw’s innumerable mail-order fetish photosets. However, the man did have competitors and imitators, so it’s far from certain:

Orientalist Witchy Women: Loving, Fighting

At first glance, this orientalist artwork by Schem looks a bit like a harem catfight to me, although it might just be a vigorous lesbian orgy. It’s hard to say!

The small amount of context I have might tip us toward the orgy theory. The artwork illustrated an article in the June 1938 issue of Le Journal Secret: Review D’éducation Sexuelle. Story title was L’Amour Sorcier chez les Arabes which, going strictly from English cognates, might mean something like “Sorcerer’s Love among the Arabs.” Presumably there’s nuance and connotation I’m missing?

The traditional slang for an informal open-handed fight between women — especially one where, at least in the male imagination, clothing is lost or removed — is a “catfight”, presumably because of the assumption that fingernails will be deployed and that scratching is likely. There’s a lot of sexism built into the notion of a catfight (cf. “hits like a girl”) but it goes deep in a culture where at least some boys are taught to make a fist and throw a punch while, perhaps, their sisters are not.

Be all that as it may, the topless female fighting in the September 1986 edition of Les drolesses #19: Sans dessus dessous from Elvifrance is just a bit more formal, taking place in a ring as a public entertainment with at least a verbal nod toward an Asian martial art:

Friday Girl Fight: Jade Vs. Power Puff

A recent post at Sexoteric reminded me that the Ultimate Surrender style of naked girlfights is just a recent entry in a long and venerable pornographic tradition:

Ally Ann looms over Tia Ling, smiling that corn-fed Nebraska farm-girl smile, but I’m seeing more confidence in Tia’s eye’s than in Ally’s. I’ve got bad news, Power Puff: This is one project where “little and cute” is not enough to get you what you want. And make no mistake, these are both tiny women in truth, as the fight card shows:
