On my first careless viewing of this artwork, my thought was “Well, we all knew that’s what happens to the beautiful young people who get sent to the Minotaur’s maze every year.” But after more careful consideration, I think those horns say “infernal goat” a lot louder than they say “bull-headed man”. Writing as I do under the “Bacchus” nom de plume, I suppose it’s appropriate that my thoughts go sooner to the beasts of classical mythology than they do to the devils and demons of Christianity. But at least both of them do have in common the ancient tropes of sexual sacrifice!

Artwork is from the cover of a book by Jehan Sylvius: Messes noires, satanistes et lucifériens (Paris, Editions de Lutèce, 1929). Of course Jehan Sylvius is pseudonym; the actual author is said to be one E. Gengenbach, who may have developed a serious butt-hurt about his Catholic religion after having been chucked out of the seminary of Saint-Dié in 1924, after having gone over the walls one night to enjoy the charms of certain actress in Paris. The cover art appears to be signed “Matutano”.

Imagine that you had a movie camera in Paris in 1928 and the notion came upon you to make the most offensive possible six-minute-long film. What might you pick for your subject?

Via Spanking Blog we learn of one good candidate for a universally-offensive topic. You might make a movie called Messe Noire (“Black Mass” in English) that features a highly-unlikely Satanic ritual, complete with blood drinking, chained sacrifices, lots of naked celebrants, and plenty of balls-flapping humping during the obligatory ceremonial orgy. Special effects — made by scratching the negative — to include eerie glowing stars on foreheads:
