Backstage At A Bikini Contest

It is January, which is to say “the dead of winter”, and as I write this post, a dreary freezing rain is falling where I am. What better time for an excursion-in-memory to the Palm Springs, California of sixty years ago?

In the September 1964 issue of Ace magazine, we find a three-page spread detailing a bikini contest for Hollywood starlets, run as a talent search for Four-Crown productions with the grand prize being a part in their next movie. Graphically speaking, what elevates this story from routine to sublime are the two backstage topless photographs of three of the blonde contestants:
