I’m too young for Paul Krassner’s The Realist to mean a lot to me; I know it primarily as the place where the famous and delightful Wally Wood Disneyland Memorial Orgy poster was first published. I’m too young to have seen the zine when it was first being published, and too old to have fully internalized (yet) what it means to live in the internet age, where long-gone ancient ephemera tends to rise again, like the phoenix, in beautiful digital form.
And that’s exactly what’s happened with The Realist — there now exists The Realist Archive Project, making available the complete run of The Realist for web viewing.
There’s a lot to see. But this oh-so-innocent photo of Ronald Reagan (back in his California governor days) made me guffaw:
