I suppose it is dual purpose.
The one I saw had two “loops” or “eyes” at the very bottom on either side, which may have initially been placed to mitigate injury, but the one I saw had dangly earrings placed in the open loops. I presume diamond studs could just as easily be added.
The one pictured seems to have these tiny loops…
