Quietly and unanimously, the Senate passed the Real ID Act last week. It’s been signed into law. Within a few years you will have a national ID card. Or you’ll be an extremely marginal member of society.
Or (and this is not exclusive with option two above) you can join the Real ID Rebellion.
Whatever your politics, remember this: sexual nonconformists always suffer in a police state.
My delete finger is gonna be twitchy in the comments on this thread. I posted the link to help people as angry as I am find like-minded folks who are looking for ways to fight. If you think this is no big deal, please express that opinion elsewhere. Save the debate for your blog. And don’t bother with partisan comments — because no Senator from either party voted against this monstrosity. I’ll ruthlessly delete any comments that try to promote or specially accuse either faction of these power-mad bastards.

Real ID is big government run amok. Just like Homeland security was completely unneeded, so is RealID. Fight this folks.. Fight it or it will fight you.

This sort of thing makes me grateful to live in New Zealand, but it does make me wonder, if huge powers can enforce things like this, how much easier would it be in a small country like my own? :confused:

I’m in Canada, and we’ve been put in the bulls-eye for not going along with the US in this and many other reguards. There are macro-economic and political forces at play against the “other english countries” (AU, NZ, CA) which will make fighting this very hard.
I wish I could help our American friends because if they fail their government will have the “political capital” to spend burning their bridges with our nations to pass similar laws.

Didn’t the nazis try something like this a few years back? Didn’t work so well then and it probably won’t work now. Problem is, you get to pay for it either way.

I’m not sure if there was really any way to vote against it without committing political suicide, though I think political suicide would have been the honorable way to go on this one. Congressman Sensenbrenner pulled a Sneaky Bastard and attached it as a rider for the <a href=”http://thomas.loc.gov/cgi-bin/bdquery/z?d109:HR01268:”>Iraq Supplementary Spending Bill</a>, and every time someone tried to take it out, they just put it right back in again.
So the question of the day is… why could he even attach it like that to begin with? That’s all kinds of underhanded.
This is really scary stuff.
Especially since our very own Prime Minister here in the UK is about to rush through similar legislation in the next few weeks.
It seems like we’ll all soon be living in Police States/Countries, if we don’t challenge the powers that be and oppose this draconian idea.
Fingers crossed this law will be thrown out of Parliament before it’s had the chance to become acceptable. And I hope for all of you in the USA, that you manage to challenge and demolish this Act before it comes into effect.

They’re trying to bring something similar in here in Australia. Presently here you don’t even need to carry a driver’s license with you when driving, if you get a ticket you simply have to present your license when you pay the ticket. There are So many downsides to having super-ID cards, from the Gov tracking your every move to marketers knowing even More about you. Anyone else for moving off-shore?
I really hate the way the Real ID act was pasted on the end of a complete unrelated appropriations bill. Unrelated riders should be outlawed. It was attached on the end of an Iraq war and tsunami relief bill because lawmakers knew that it had no chance of passing on its own, but also knew that nobody would vote against funding for protecting our soldiers in Iraq and relief for tsunami victims. No matter what your party affiliation the lawmakers without a spine who neglected to stand up for the fact that this unrelated act did not belong in an appropriation bill should be ousted – oh wait, that would be every single senator. Don’t vote for any incumbent senator next election.
Seriously! My wallet is fat enough with cute little plastic rectangles. Hope Uncie Sam will buy me a thicker wallet.

Don’t be fooled: Canada has been strongly contemplating “Smart Cards” for a couple of years here, starting with your entire medical records (thanks, Universal Health Care… anybody ever been in for depression or other mental illness?)
I’m just surprised the US got to it first. This marks the beginning of The End of Dissent for anyone who disagrees with The Government: libertarians, religious people, alternate-lifestyle folks, and so on and so on…

Yeah I was so pissed about this last week, and I thought I was the only person who saw it.
There are so many levels of dangerous this National ID is, that everyone from anarchists to super right wing christians hate it.
It’s the average joe in the middle who is indifferent to the whole thing and that’s how it passed. If you have a voice anyone listens to, pitch a fit about this loudly. Tell the average Joe about how his life is going to dramatically change because some Senator piggybacked this horrible legislation to tsunami relief funds.
The fact that every senator voted on this, regardless of party, shows that this is about something much deeper. National ID initiative polls show an overwhelming opposition to the idea of a National ID card, yet the lawmakers we voted into office, happily jumped right in.
It’s dirty, and I’m moving to Canada when it comes into being.

According to the Wall Street Journal ( http://online.w....html ), WalMart has begun embedding radio frequency identification tags into products that they offer to consumers. If the feds put these chips in our driver’s licenses , and we carry a package in the mall from one store to the next, each store we enter or entrance we pass near can not only “read” our purchases, but know who just purchased them. The chip (so far), has no battery, and is “charged” by a radioed microwave (that activates it’s circuitry), as you walk near a reader.
The larger grocers now have a machine that reads your store discount card and prints out shopper specific coupons. To keep you from traveling to other branches of that same chain (and stocking up on a bargain-priced item), the kiosk sends a radio message out to the other stores that tells them which coupons you’ve printed out and prevents duplications.
These spy machines, acting in tandem, can track your various activities so that soon as you walk past a vending machine it will sense your I.D. and talk to you saying, “Good afternoon Mr. Bacchus, I see that it has been 5.5 hours since you consumed your last ‘Five Hour Energy’ drink! Wouldn’t you like to purchase another boost? … or perhaps you would like to switch to your favorite anesthesia, a nice cold Tequiza?”
These chips can be easily embedded in each twenty dollar bill that the bank counts out to you on payday, and if they later show up at your local crack dealer’s den (when he gets busted or killed), you might have a LOT explaining to do…
Soon these tags will be sewn directly and inextricably into the very fibers of our clothing. Each item that you buy will be marked with a one of a kind number that directly ties you to it at the point of purchase. The clerk at a Victoria’s Secret store will glance at a screen at the checkout and say. “Good afternoon Ms. Nymph, I see that you are wearing your partner’s three year old boxers today, wouldn’t you like to purchase a new silk satin thong while yours are all apparently in the dirty laundry hamper?”
The government or some mega-corporation will monitor each political rally or protest march you participate in, and list them in your computer file, and note every book that you purchase or check out of the library on resisting big brother government or the oligarchy.

The U.S. military has already chipped a good number of our troops (like you would chip a valued pet), under the guise of tracking them, in case they are captured by enemy combatants.
