Unconventional Flower Marketing
My first thought on seeing this photo (via Lunatico) was that the flower selling dude is an idiot:
My second thought, however, was that maybe he knows stuff we don’t know about the demographic, attitudes, and inclinations of his target market among the men in his neighborhood.
Is he a marketing idiot or a marketing genius? We’ll never know.

I think all we really know is that he paid attention to the “alliteration” lesson in junior high English class.
I’m betting on the reverse side of his placard, he’s written, “Buy Your Babe A Bunch.”
See how clever? He can target his marketing according to the attitude of each approaching man!
There’s something to be said for honesty in advertising/marketing. I think I’d buy from this guy for the simple reason that he’s being honest. He’s not sugar-coating the sales process. He’s stating exactly what he thinks of it. It’s rather refreshing to see such honesty in a day and age where cellular companies will say almost anything to get you to sign a contract on their service, or computer companies are doing everything short of offering blowjobs when you buy a computer from them, not their competition. Though, the blowjob would probably convince me.
I think he’s brilliant. When I had a “real” job there was a guy daily stationed at the off ramp I used on my way to the office. He had quite a few signs and changed them up now and again. Two of the funniest:
WON’T WORK, JUST WANT BEER.
and
WILL KILL YOUR MOTHER-IN-LAW FOR BEER.
I gave him a dollar every single day. Quirky ingenuity is something I really admire in a person.
They showed us this photo in a sociology class I took recently. Supposedly,he’s outside a Steelers game and did some brisk business!

Yes.
To amplify, my mom passed away a lot of years ago, so it’s not a holiday of any significance to me. I was only vaguely aware that it was coming up.
I can’t say if it was marketing genius or not, but I came across this photo a few months ago and sent it along to my girl. She had already seen it (courtesy of her ex-husband), but it still provided me with reason enough to send her roses with the note “A bunch for my…”
For those interested in veracity, this gentleman proffers his wares at the SE corner of State Road & Cottman Avenue in Philadlephia, at the first traffic light off of the Cottman Ave. exit of NB I95. While I have not seen this sign, I have seen him there as I live nearby and exit here on my way home for work.

I’m thinking he’s got a bunch of signs or sayings, and changes them based on his demographic. It looks to me like ‘bitch’ is written on a separate piece of cardboard, so he’s got SOMETHING else written under there. Perhaps ‘babe’ to keep with the alliteration.
This is actually a guy who was selling them not too far from where I live in Philadelphia. I’ve never seen a greater marketing campaign. He was right off the highway and everytime i’d come off he’d have customers.
I’m revisiting this after following a series of “Random Old Posts”.
It just occurred to me that perhaps you were right and that it’s a result of his own market research. maybe every third customer pulls up and says “Things haven’t been going to smoothly with my old lady lately, so I guess I should buy the bitch a bunch before I come home to find my clothes strewn across our front lawn.”
To which the seller replies something along the lines of “Been there dude. The bouquet would have been cheaper. Good Luck.”
