The Most Beautiful Adornments
Dr. Faustus and his recent post on the sexual metaphor of flowers was fresh in my mind when I stumbled over this erotic bookplate:
Sadly, I don’t share enough intellectual context with the artist to know who s/he was quoting and citing as “G. VII, 3”.

That is very pretty!
Love her smile!
What a beautiful image. Sometimes sketches are more stimulating than photographs.
Beautiful drawing.
I also like her smiles. Both of them ;)
I do enjoy the coy look on her face as if she is not at all concerned that someone may have seen her best intimate parts.
Well, I’m not sure who he was quoting, but the artist is Mark Severin. He was a pretty formidable bookplate engraver in his time, if I’m not mistaken, and a good deal of his work was erotic.
I wonder if bees have a sense of artistic appreciation? “oooh, make sure you check out the marigolds 500m E of the hive, I Really like what they’ve done with their stamen this year”
Quote probably from Carl von Linné in Sponsalia Plantarum from 1746, where the Swedish taxiologist describes the sex life of plants.
Echoing Alfie’s point, and I’ve thought this a number of times. Images like this one, and “Caught In The Act” and “Like Mother, Like Daughter” as well, I find MUCH more appealing and interesting to look at than I would three actual photographs showing exactly the same thing. I wonder why that is?
Note to alex99a:
Perhaps it is due to the fact that accomplished artists are so revered for their talents, it is comforting to know that they have the same erotic obsessions as the rest of us…
And for THAT, I for one am grateful.
