Pillories Are For Sex
Does anybody really believe that the ancients invented the pillory just so they could subject its unfortunate prisoners to an uncomfortable posture and some public ridicule?
Yeah, probably not.

Ridicule? Perhaps. Furtive fucking after sunset, with breeches shoved down and skirts pulled up? Definitely!
(This is one of those ‘features in my fantasies’ setups, can you tell?)

Just as in prison today, rape or the spectre of rape, was considered a major component of the punishment when being sentenced to be pilloried: http://www.nosp...3.htm
The locking panel was often made of enough large planks to prevent the prisoner from being able to see who was approaching him or her from behind. In some towns, being locked overnight in a pillory virtually guaranteed abuse in the wee hours of the morning. If you were lucky, the worst thing that happened to you was that some hooligan would merely yank your knickers to your knees…
Many pillories were outfitted with a “T”-shaped board which fit under the prisoner’s waist, between the navel and hip bones, which raised one’s backside provocatively, prevented the captive from wiggling defensively, , and gave a firm bar to thrust against. Often there was also a horizontal board (perpendicular to the head and wrist boards and on a parallel plane to the ground), which also clamped the ankles firmly in place: http://fc05.dev...x.jpg
If you weren’t financially well-off enough to hire a personal bodyguard, you had to rely on having friends and relatives keep a watch on you.
Even in the daytime you had to be worried about being covered in feces or urine.
