Adults Making Adult Decisions
I’m sure it’s a controversial position in some circles, but this by Josie Marcellino does make a substantial point:
If you’re of the belief that becoming a mattress actress [porn performer] at 18 is predatory and a bad idea because you’re still not fully formed and you don’t know what you’re doing to yourself, you do have to believe the same thing about getting married and having children at 18.
I want to raise my own hand in objection to anyone who proposes to tell adults when or why they should fuck. If you want to argue about how we define adults these days (it’s trendy recently to talk about prefrontal cortexes and when they stop growing) that’s a fair conversation. But no fair carving out sex as a special category that lets us sneer at the adult decisions adults make, especially if you want to divide it into goodsex and badsex subcategories with different rules. People are adults, or they’re not. You respect the decisions adults make about sex, or you can fuck right off.

The age of consent here in the UK is 16, but many legal rights are withheld until 18. It has always struck me as stupid that there is no one consistent assessment of adulthood regardless of purpose, one way to say a person is an adult and therefore able to decide for themselves or take responsibility for themselves. It’s ludicrous to suggest that someone who can be married, and enjoying a full sexual relationship is not mature enough to drive a car or drink alcohol, or legally look at unclothed images. Surely a person is an adult in all respects or not. But the law is an ass, a creature it cannot distinguish from it’s elbow.
And if the law is an ass, people are too. If someone reaches age of adulthood in their jurisdiction, then how they act is the concern of the law, and of their conscience. If someone chooses to make the most of their talents in the adult industry, then they will probably make the most while young, because we all live in societies that push that youth is attractive, and by reaching that age where we say someone is an adult, it is their choice and theirs alone. Good luck to them. Whether the adult industry is a safe employment, or a moral one are questions society needs to address, and they do that via laws. If it’s legal, then it’s no-one’s business whatever an individual chooses.
As to whether the age of adulthood is valid or not, who knows, around the world it varies wildly. Someone I once knew claimed his daughter was independent and not his responsibility once she hit 9, based on his religious beliefs. That one I called bullshit on. Others claim it should relate to age of puberty, but puberty doesn’t make you fit to make decisions, just reproduce. It is again for the lawmakers to rule, but I for one would like some more intelligent measure of capability than years alive. I have known several girls under 16 who have been more mature and capable than my peers. One colleague at Uni got a 14 year old girl pregnant, but of the two of them, she was the more mature, emotionally intelligent and stable, and he was an appalling partner and father, eventually abandoning them.
So yeah. Definitely +1. If you’re considered an adult, end of, and what you choose to do with that, inside the law, and if no-one else gets harmed, lay on.
