The story of this nude painting is that Bela Lugosi commissioned it to be painted of Clara Bow after what may or may not have been a brief fling or possibly a brief engagement, although there’s little strong evidence of either. Bow did not sit for the painting (possibly explaining why, in some eyes, it little resembles her) but Lugosi clearly treasured it, keeping it in his house on prominent display through two marriages until his death.
