Friendly Governor Reagan

Monday, March 7th, 2011 -- by Bacchus

I’m too young for Paul Krassner’s The Realist to mean a lot to me; I know it primarily as the place where the famous and delightful Wally Wood Disneyland Memorial Orgy poster was first published. I’m too young to have seen the zine when it was first being published, and too old to have fully internalized (yet) what it means to live in the internet age, where long-gone ancient ephemera tends to rise again, like the phoenix, in beautiful digital form.

And that’s exactly what’s happened with The Realist — there now exists The Realist Archive Project, making available the complete run of The Realist for web viewing.

There’s a lot to see. But this oh-so-innocent photo of Ronald Reagan (back in his California governor days) made me guffaw:

Kissing Book, 1936

Monday, January 3rd, 2011 -- by Bacchus

I suspect I’d trust Violet Blue’s advice on the subject rather further, but one Hugh Morris made a stab in 1936 in The Art of Kissing:

Then, with a series of little nips, bring your lips around from the nape of her neck to the curving swerve of her jaw, close to the ear. Gently kiss the lobe of her ear. But be sure to return to the tender softness of her jaw. From then on, the way should be clear to you. Nuzzle your lips along the soft, downy expanse until you reach the corner of her lips. You will know when this happens because, suddenly, you will feel a strange stiffening of her shoulders under your arm. Kiss her! Kiss her as though, at that moment, nothing else exists in the world. Kiss her as though your entire life is wrapped up into the period of the kiss. Kiss her!
