To Put It Another Way, Porn Sucks
It’s tres chic to criticize pornography; probably every literate person does at some time or another, despite the shooting-fish-in-a-rainbarrel nature of the enterprise. But few manage to do it with such elan:
I find almost all porn to be insufferable. The inflated breasts, the blond hair, the absence of the merest trace of thespian ability. But the thing that repulses me most of all, is the stupidity. I’m not talking about the inane dialogue that is written to give porn films a plausible scenario. I’m talking about the insipid direction, lighting, cinematography. The men’s gym-tits and deli-window dicks. The women’s gonfle tits, cookie-cutter measurements, greasy sheen. Their interchangable clonedness. The repetitive and unimaginative scenes in which the same buttons get pushed over and over and over and over again. It’s like a printing press that prints out the same newspaper day after day, and we’re supposed to be interested.
Thanks to Madame G.
By the way, anybody know what “gonfle tits” are? It sounds like a dessert to Bacchus….

Sex really isnt that interesting now is it? I mean, there’s only so many things you could do that qualify as sexual, even fewer still that are interesting for MOST people to watch. Copulation only has a few scenerios in which it can arise. It’s hard I’m sure to find new and interesting ways to present an act as old as mankind.
It’s really a two-pronged problem: first, the producers want to get as much product out on the shelves as quickly and as cheaply as possible, and two: it’s a failure of imagination on their parts. Take a look at the stuff produced by Femme Films. They seem to have the right idea: build up a fantasy around the act, so it actually MEANS something.
I have no doubt that porn could be worthwhile: look at XXXenophile, or the graphic stories of Michael Manning. It’s just that right now, the industry is run by clods.
I wouldn’t say the industry is run by clods based on the quality of porn–I might say it based on other things, but lets be honest. Porn is stigmatized, so no matter HOW good and classy and awesome it is, you have an opposition to your product by (according to statistics) at least 60% of the US. Not only that, but the advent of the internet means that the people who actually make “professional” porn are making LESS money.
Sex sells by virtue of being sex. Obviously, when sex is just an advertising tool (hot girl posing on a car) then the product has to have a measure of quality to it. However, when sex IS the product–the horny masses will purchase it, and those of us who want something more out of our erotic experiences will remain a very very sad minority.
