Kissing Kissing Kissing
Here’s a detailed article — let’s call it Everything You Always Wanted To Know About Kissing But Were Afraid To Ask — from the How Stuff Works people. One thing I didn’t know:
Ancient Romans also used kissing as part of political campaigns. However, several “kisses for votes” scandals in 18th century England led — in theory — to candidates kissing only the very young and very old.
Kisses for votes? How did that work, exactly? I can see it now, George Clooney and Halle Berry, they could flip a coin to see who’s at the top of the ticket, a runaway “Kisses For America” campaign.

I dunno… but getting a mouthful of saliva from the governer of California doesn’t sound all that appealing to me. =
Maybe it’s a form of ego-vampirism? By kissing, the kisser flatters the kissed, implying a sort of gracious superiority? A way to reinforce loyalty amongst the devout by demonstrating they are worthy of the leaders affection?
Or maybe in acneint Roman times being affectionate with any and all was a sign of open-mindedness, or some other desirable trait in a leader.
Ohhh this article is making me all sorts of antsy for some good ol’ fashioned smoosh-face.
Le sigh.
Yay, i learned something today!
Bacchus,
One such incident occurred in March 1784, when the Duchess of Devonshire kissed a butcher in exchange for the butchers’ vote for opposition (Whig) candidate Charles James Fox. It was significant in this election because the Whigs won.
Ironically, I ran across mention of this scandal while reading last night. It caught my attention because of your entry!
