Wow. Lovely. Just beautiful. I think I am going to sit here and stare at her for a bit.
I have to agree, wow indeed. Very pretty. Definitely something to be said for that vintage art.
If I recall correctly this is an early 20th century photo of a real live Arab slave in Morocco… she’s lovely, but the context of the reality of nonconsensual sexual slavery takes some of the fun out of it…..
Old Leecher, if you recall correctly? Recall what, exactly?
Not trying to be mean, but a pet peeve of mine is people claiming to have knowledge about the subject of a photo when they couldn’t possibly have the knowledge. I’m unclear how you’d know (how any of us would know) the status of the lady in the photograph at this late date, unless it’s got a published historical context somewhere. Most picture postcards, to be honest, don’t. Even when they had a lurid caption (“Favorite slave of Pasha Al-Humongus Penisababa”) the caption was most often a lie chosen to sell postcards.
Sorry, but you don’t get to rain on other people’s fun around here without more citation than “If I recall correctly” about facts that you presumably weren’t a witness to.
The phrase reflects the fact that I recall the picture from an old not-quite-pornographic German language book I no longer possess (it was destroyed in a basement flood, alas) on female slavery. There was a chapter on slavery in Morocco which included several photographs, including the young woman in question, describing them as slave girls. The book dated to the late 19th or early 20th centuries, a time when slavery still existed in Morocco. If I still had the book I’d give you a complete citation.
