The Snake Charmer Is Not A Dude
A while back I got in trouble for assuming that a naked but gender-ambiguous snake charmer in an Orientalist painting was female. Words like “obviously wrong” got thrown around, and much scholarly analysis of pigment-gender was cited. Not only was I wrong, but I was (to judge by some of the ruder comments I deleted) an idiot for ever imagining that there might be room in the Orientalist pantheon for a female nude snake charmer.
Well, this one doesn’t look like a dude to me:
The artist is Paul Desire Trouillebert.

Just say no to Anabolic Steroids.

LOL, now I’m being trolled by my own readers. ;-)
Ohh… she’s just lovely. Thank you for posting it.
sHe is a transgender who is self-identified as a male, so your typical parochial and patriarchal comments represent your unenlightened attitude — thereby causing suffering in millions of peoPle who don’t meet the rigid standards of your medieval value system….
(sorry, I can’t maintain a straight face even as I write this)
Personally, I think she’s hot, and I’d hit that…
What in hell is that under the bed?!
I’m of the opinion that a female snake charmer is the more natural of two, and possibly far more effective. Unless, of course, snakes really do prefer flutes.
