Something Else For Rich Men To Buy
Bacchus has a long running-series here called why rich men buy boats. I think I get the point, but my recent stumbling across this art by the Ukrainian artist Alexey Lipatov makes me wonder whether a seaplane might not make an even finer acquisition.
I mean, just look at that awesome engine!
Found at the Second Life blog SL Jazz After Midnight, along with much other dieselpunk goodness.

‘Tis a “Flying Boat” – *not* a seaplane.
And another would-be internet pedant shoots on goal from six feet out, bounces the puck off the goal post, hits himself in the head, and knocks himself unconscious!
From Wikipedia: “A sea plane is a fixed-wing aircraft capable of taking off and water landing (alighting) on water. Seaplanes which can also take-off and land on airfields are a small subclass called amphibian aircraft. Seaplanes and amphibians are usually divided into two categories based on their technological characteristics: floatplanes and flying boats, which are generally far larger and can carry far more.”
So that would make this both a sea plane and a flying boat. No “somebody is wrong on the internet” points for you!
And just to satisfy the anti-wikipedians: see also, dictionary.com.
First of all, it’s a really cool pic, and well drawn.
[internet pedant]A seaplane can be a flying boat or a float plane;
Same for an amphibian, if it has auxiliary wheels.
A floatplane has landing gear in the form of floats, while a seaplane has the buoyant portion built into the fuselage-the main body of the craft.[/internet pedant]
Oh, and they’re often much more expensive than a boat.
Did I mention that the drawing is really well done?
It captures the romance of the 1930s heyday of that type of aircraft. Thanks for all the great stuff you find and post here, Bacchus.
This was posted by Dr. Faustus, of course. But to the extent it was a general compliment, you’re welcome!
Just commenting to thanks, Dr Faustus, for directing me to tvtropes.com
that there’s a national treasure. Really. Thanks.
Dieselpunk explains my tastes for Atlas Shrugged, Last Exile, Brazil, and on and on.
That would have been “commenting to say thanks”
The point was that it is still a *boat*. Whoosh! (Duck, something is flying over your heads! :-))
When I first saw this drawing, it reminded me of the Russian Ekranoplan:

Although it was jet propulsion, and this artwork depicts a propeller driven craft, so they’re entirely different animals as it were. I’m not surprised that the artist happens to be Ukrainian…
It seems odd that Daffy Duck is on it though…
