From an article on the difficulties of starting a soft-core erotic printed-on-paper magazine in the modern world: “…attempting to recreate an aesthetic that died years ago in an industry that is collapsing in a medium that is declining.”
Yeah, that’s about right. Good luck with that!

A sad commentary though, there is nothing quite like the feel of a printed page. Aside from that, being spanked with a Kindle is just not the same as a rolled up newspaper or magazine.
I feel sorry for them, but really, they are swimming upstream big time. As are we all, nowadays, but going with a softcore print publication is swimming upstream with anvils strapped to your arms.
Yeah Pat. Quite frankly when I consider “an aesthetic that died years ago in an industry that is collapsing in a medium that is declining” in isolation, it feels to me that it could as easily describe adult blogs. Print? On actual paper? Man, that’s a heavy load to carry in today’s mobile devices and apps ecosystem — even websites aren’t doing the business they used to.
I don’t know that adult blogs were ever an “industry.”
No, but porn was. And I can’t speak for other adult blogs, but ErosBlog wouldn’t have come this far without lots of porn. Nor is there any question that the porn industry today is a pale shadow of what it was, say, seven years ago.
I don’t know if adult blogs are an industry, but didn’t Penthouse Letters resemble a modern blog?
Tabitha is right, reading sex on a Kindle is like masturbating when you know you’re know you could be getting the real thing. What’s the point?
That’s not quite what Tabitha said … pay attention! ;-)
As for reading about sex on the Kindle … as opposed to getting spanked with one … I rather like it for that purpose because of the anonymity and privacy of it. A lot of “dirty books” have lurid covers, but my bland black leather Kindle cover tells no tales.
Tabitha is onto something about the printed page. Not only the thickness of the paper itself, but also its rag content or its clay content can affect me. Hell, even its acid content has an effect.
The actual printing process involved can also bring me pleasure as can the correct marriages of the two.
There is something about the physical presence of a book or magazine.
I realize I’m speaking to a large extent rather subjectively, however, I would agree less about their differences as spanking implements. A Kindle may give one that satisfying thud that one can feel way down in the “bowels” of one’s body (Which has its attraction…), but it lacks the handle extension that a proper paddle has, which can give that additional snap of the wrist (just prior to impact), which in turn produces that oh-so-satisfying sting and higher-pitched smacking sound.
Rolled up magazines and tightly folded newspapers (again basically thud-producing tools), are good in a spontaneous emergency, but personally, I’d recommend a modified (elongated), ping-pong paddle shape made from clear 3/16″ thick “unbreakable” Lexan (polycarbonate), or PETG (glycol-modified polyethylene terephthalate), with rounded edges.
If you can’t make (or have made for you), the above instruments of pleasure, a good quality heavy leather slapper about three inches wide makes an excellent variation.
…matters of opinion all. I suppose further experimentation is warranted…
