Squirted With Seltzer
I’m old enough to be aware that squirting people with seltzer water used to be a mainstay of early-20th-century slapstick comedy, but I’m not old enough to understand quite why it was thought to be so amusing. Does it get funnier if the victim of the prank is a scantily-clad burlesque dancer?
This photo was, according to the captions, taken in a New York City nightclub. I found it in the May 1949 issue of Eyeful magazine.

I think the operative word here may be “squirt”.
As in female orgasm, male orgasm, or golden showers.
I’ve even seen victims attacked by more than one squirter at the same time, resembling a bukkake situation.
I’m guessing that this conscious or subconscious connection may be at play in the fascination.
I have also often wondered about the cream pie to the face as a bukkake connection. I’ve also seen multiple cream pies to the face one right after the other, which is a bit of an overkill after the first face full.
“Cream pie” and “squirt” are both sexual slang terms of course…
I would not be at all surprised to find their origins in comedic burlesque house time fillers between stripping acts. We’ll probably never know the etymology or etiology of these slapstick practices, so we can only guess at how conscious the first decision to commit these acts were, or why we thought they were funny…
You are probably right! The connection between slapstick comedy and burlesque is a close one, and burlesque absolutely thrives on visual analogies, almost like rhyming slang does.
An early version of the wet tee shirt contest?
I can remember, many years ago, going to an agricultural show. On one of the stands there was a young man demonstrating a spray device. He pointed it at a young woman in a white blouse which became nearly transparent when wet. T%here was a great deal of embarrassment – this was in the days when having bra straps shwing was some5tthing to be avoided.
