A Spouse’s Wishful Thinking
Someone sent me this:
It’s captioned “my husband suffers from a disease called wishful thinking.” On one level, this is a comedy video that they made together, so I’m not gonna pick on these actual internet funny-people for enacting a joke about a stereotype: the “no” wife who makes fun of her horny husband for wanting “too much” sexually. But I’m easily seduced into meta-analysis. I start thinking about the structure of the joke, and about the stereotypes the joke invokes. Which stereotypical spouse’s thinking is more wishful, truly? His, for wanting something slightly risky and sexually adventurous from his until-death-do-us-part ride-or-die life partner? Or hers, for assuming she can count on that lifetime of love and loyalty and commitment from him while rejecting and lightly mocking his sexual overtures?

Well if we’re going all meta-…
Who the heck bends over like that to sip from a mug they’re holding? Ok it’s a humungous cup, but she’s not exactly struggling to lift it. I suspect she wanted to spit something out into the cup, which fits better with bending over like that. So… maybe she was reaching for the cup after, not before and her laugh is What again? Already? I’m still tidying up from last time.
Though my first thought watching it was more what on earth are they driving in? It’s huge.
Honestly I took the “bent over to take a sip from her mug” thing as a filmographic trick — because it indeed suggests she was bending down to do exactly what we were all thinking when we saw it. Setting the stage and priming the viewer for the subsequent humor. As for the vehicle, well, there are a lot of large SUVs out there, but also when digital cameras do their autofocus magic it can really distort how things appear. Maybe we can get an automotive nut in here who will recognize the make/model from the interior trim details?
I know, it seemed done clumsily, till I thought of an alternative reason for her to bend her head that way, but that said, I’m not sure this is likely to be up for an Oscar.
I was looking at the space between them and how far she’s leaning into shot. It seems a very wide vehicle compared to anything I’ve ridden in.
Besides which, isn’t it obvious? It must be a Hummer surely.
I’ll get my coat…
