Why We Care About Monogamy

I learned something today while reading a post at Diabasis with the wonderful name You Don’t Screw Enough, Part 2. Specifically, the post finally let me grok why we tend to put so much energy into the pursuit of a thing we call monogamy — a thing that in practice tends to look more like “as much monogamy for our partners as we can enforce, while we continue to screw whomever we can.” To explain this in my own head I’ve formerly relied upon a weaksauce theory having its roots in pop evolutionary biology, but this makes much more sense to me:

Having access to rare things is good for status, but ownership, the ability to exclude others, is even better. You get a lot more social mileage out of having Old Master in your study than just going to see one in a museum, owning beachfront property has far more cachet than just being able to go to the beach, and your securing admission to Princeton is made all the sweeter by knowing that for every applicant who got in, eleven are rejected.

Now if people are actually fairly promiscuous, then how socially awesome must you be if you can somehow monopolize the sexual attentions of a very attractive person? Impose a sacrifice of sexual opportunities on them? (Or at the very least, push their sexual alternatives into socially invisible spaces – the tryst with the gardener, the dalliance with the call girl.) At the extreme end of human societies we have potentates (marvelous word!) constructing harems with enforced monogamy for many, but even our humble middle classes have their own version of this, grabbing what little status they can by imposing monogamy on each other.

Sex Advice From A Magazine

Here’s Emily Nagoski on getting your sex advice from the writers who write for pop magazines:

The ubiquity of sex writing that neglects actual helpfulness or accuracy and focuses exclusively on entertainment just makes life harder for anyone whose job it is to untangle the sociopsychological knots that popular culture, including these columns, create in people’s sexualities.

People really, truly want to know how to be better lovers, understand what their partner wants, and how to be more attractive to their crush object. People are starving for this information. It’s why they read the columns, at least in part. I can’t be the only person who, at 18, read these kinds of things ravenously, only to be left bloated and disappointed. It’s like giving candy to a starving person: hell yes it will taste good and it might even make them feel full, but it won’t actually nourish them.

And, know though I do that Emily meant this in complete seriousness, I still LOLed when I read it:

Then again, you can ask me but you won’t particularly like the answers because they are not entertaining; they involve you doing stuff you don’t want to do. What you really want to know is how to meet a man without having to sieve through dozens of people you’re not interested in, without having to depart your comfort zone, without risking rejection. And what you really want to know is how to turn on a woman with something that turns YOU on, rather than with empathy, consideration, and affection.

It funny because it true.

The Marquess Of Bath And His 74 Women

Normally I don’t link to this sort of squalid tabloid fare, but…

It’s important to remember, the rich are not like you and me.

Consider the Marquess of Bath. He has a wife, who conveniently lives “overseas” most of the time. He’s got a 10,000 acre spread with a mansion on it. He’s worth 160 million pounds. He’s 79 years old. And he’s got 74 girlfriends, although he only keeps a few of the favorites in cottages on the premises.

Not for nothing do they call him “The Loins of Longleat.” Man has a “famously obscene” Kama Sutra room in his house. And when his girlfriends get to bickering, or even fighting, he just turns off his hearing aid and suggests a game of chess.

Oh yes, and he’s known for swallowing whole mackerel at parties. What a charmer!

The next time somebody tries to tell you money isn’t an aphrodisiac? Laugh at them, please.

It Can Be Orgy Time Now

I guess the little orgy is about to get started; the gentlemen are blowing up the French letters while the ladies watch with approval.
