Another Golden Shower

About five years ago I offered a quick update on the legend of how Perseus’s mother Danaë got pregnant with him while locked away in a basement, thanks to Zeus and his expedient of manifesting himself as a shower of sticky gold coins. That post included four different artistic treatments of that seminal moment. Here’s another, by the same Alex Székely who painted the recently-appearing portfolio of sex parties:

Sadly I have no information on why Danaë has a helpful handmaiden in this version.

Showers Of Gold

Today seems like a fine day to examine the rich artistic tradition surrounding the conception of Perseus. Are your umbrellas ready? Good!

It’s a long story, but the short version is: Danaë was locked in a basement by her father (for reasons) but got impregnated anyhow by Zeus, who appeared to her as a shower of gold coins. (Apparently the almighty Zeus had somehow internalized a “chicks dig gold, right?” philosophy of seduction.) The resulting scene has proved to be very popular with artists from every age.

The painting at the top of the post is by Léon François Comerre. This next one is by Alexander Sigov, and the one after that is by Gustav Klimt. At the bottom of the post is artwork from a Greek vase circa 450 BC that’s now in the Louvre.

When I first saw this Wally Wood cartoon that sex-spoofs The Wizard Of Oz, I was reminded of Mistress Matisse’s advice from 2001 (and from 2004 and from 2005 and from whenever anybody will listen to it):

Don’t say, “I will do anything you want, Mistress!” Believe me, I can easily think of things you would not want to do.

It’s equally dangerous to say “I enjoy all sorts of perversions.” It could even be fatal, and not just in the funny books:
