The Worst She Can Say Is “No”

Friday, March 22nd, 2024 -- by Bacchus

A common word of advice for young men who lack confidence in their social skills is “Go on, ask her out. What’s the worst that could happen? The worst she can say is no, right?”

It’s bad advance, and this anecdote from Reddit is proof:

Some dude at school asked out a girl he saw in the hallway. She started crying and then she asked him “Am I so ugly you actually thought you had a chance with me?”

Ouch!

Equality For Women? It’s Bad For Pickup Artists

Sunday, December 16th, 2018 -- by Bacchus

This is old news, but new to me: apparently one of the notorious PUAs (pickup artists) from five years ago went to Denmark (hoping to write a PUA travel book about the place) and discovered that his “game” shit didn’t work there, apparently because Danish women don’t have the degree of economic dependence on men that he was used to. Or, as Katie J.M. Baker put it in Cockblocked by Redistribution: A Pick-up Artist in Denmark:

Marginalized women who need male spouses to flourish might, indeed, find pick-up artists alluring. But women in countries that have gender-equalizing policies supported by an anti-individualist culture may not.

Shucky-darn, I say!

PUA Of 1947

Saturday, August 11th, 2012 -- by Bacchus

This paragraph (from a 1947 letter from Neal Cassady to Jack Kerouac) reads a lot like that blather that modern pickup artists use when they are bragging or trying to sell a seminar video:

Without the slightest preliminaries of objective remarks (what’s your name? where are you going? etc.) I plunged into a completely knowing, completely subjective, personal & so to speak “penetrating her core” way of speech; to be shorter (since I’m getting unable to write) by 2 AM I had her swearing eternal love, complete subjectivity to me & immediate satisfaction. I, anticipating even more pleasure, wouldn’t allow her to blow me on the bus, instead we played, as they say, with each other.

Gamer Groupies

Saturday, July 18th, 2009 -- by Bacchus

An important insight, found buried among much that is questionable in a pickup artist’s Sixteen Commandments Of Poon:

There is a groupie for every male endeavor. Except World of Warcraft.
