Sex Work Is Real Work
From Radical Graffiti:
Bathroom wall graffiti, somewhere in California, says “Sex work is real work, unlike being a landlord.”

Disagree. Being a landlord is REAL work, being the guy who needs to clean that wall, fix the plumbing, patch the holes in the walls from angry, drunken tenants, replacing the lightbulbs, unplug the toilets, keep the air conditioning and heating working. It’s especially hard work when the tenants won’t pay the rent or cause damage or create problems.
Counterpoint
On one hand I live somewhere where the rent for a studio apartment is about full-time minimum wage (just the rent, no groceries, phone, clothes, public transit and other things you need to hold full-time work) on the other hand I recently read a sob story about someone who both complained that the rent in their apartment had risen a bit less than inflation over 15 years and this was too expensive, and complained about a lack of repairs and maintenance. The person didn’t seem to consider that the two might be connected!
Ok, now I’ll bite.
@Vagans, the two may be connected, but perhaps the horse goes before the cart.
I had a landlord try to raise my rent by 50% about 3 years after I moved in. He claimed his lawyer had told him he was massively undercharging for the specification of the property as it had a garage in an area with no on road parking, and few garages. My response was to invite him to send his lawyer to inspect the list of things I’d asked the landlord to attend to when I moved in, all still pending, as well as the legally required gas safety certificate, that was 2 years out of date. Weirdly that was the last I heard of rent increases.
For balance I helped my partner do the repairs and redecorating after one very bad malicious tenant moved out of a property last summer. It took us a week, but the costs far exceeded their deposit.
I found the article Bacchus linked to above very interesting, as I’ve seen lots of supporting evidence for it, but not strung it together that way. I’ve only ever rented from one landlord that took their responsibilities seriously, and sadly she retired. There are laws governing landlords in this country, but, like the post office, and politicians, those inside the system pissing out rarely get prosecuted for even the most blatant abuses.
I do love the fact that we all accept sex work is real work. It’s the professionalism of landlords we’re debating. Which is absolutely how it should be.
Now can we please have a pretty picture, all this social realism is making me feel desperately off topic…
Hand JOB!
Blow JOB!
Hair JOB!
Titty JOB!
Foot JOB!
…unless of course you really enjoy giving… ;p
Well, they say if you make your hobby your job, then you’ll never work a day in your life!
