Kama Sutra, Palm Leaf Book Edition

Some time ago an Internet Archive engineer tweeted two photos of a palm leaf book edition of the Kama Sutra at the Internet Archive, from which I have abstracted the following details:

It is unclear to me whether the palm leaf Kama Sutra has yet been scanned and added to the Internet Archive’s digital collection; it’s not popping up in the most obvious search, but I’m well aware that (a) searching the Archive is not for amateurs; (b) quite deliberately, the Archive focuses on data acquisition and preservation first and data visibility (search tools) second, because data is always vanishing at Library-of-Alexandria-on-fire rates while search can always be improved later; and (c) as part of (b), the Archive takes in physical objects all the time that they don’t immediately digitize because of budget and resource constraints. So whenever there’s something you suspect the Internet Archive has, but you can’t find it or get to it, the twin answers are “chill and wait” and “give them money.”

There’s an interesting review in the New York Times of what sounds like a rather awesome new translation of the Kama Sutra. However, it’s important to remember that not all of the teachings in the Kama Sutra are good ones:

The Kama Sutra provides a recipe to make a man invisible so he can sneak into a harem. There is wince-inducing advice, involving insect bristles and a string hammock, for enlarging the penis. If you would like a woman to be faithful, we are told, sprinkle her with “a mixture of powered milkweed thorns, hogweed,” monkey feces and “root of glory lily.”

What earthly good, I ask you, is a faithful woman who reeks of monkey feces?

On The Merits Of Sexual Variety

We all know of the legendary Kama Sutra and its endless catalog of sexual variety. But do you know why those varieties were spelled out in such loving detail?

I just discovered this explanation, from near the end of the famous translation by Sir Richard Burton:

The chief reason for the separation between the married couple and the cause which drives the husband to the embraces of strange women, and the wife to the arms of strange men, is the want of varied pleasures and the monotony which follows possession. There is no doubt about it.

Monotony begets satiety, and satiety distaste for congress, especially in one or the other; malicious feelings are engendered, the husband or the wife yields to temptation, and the other follows, being driven by jealousy.

For it seldom happens that the two love each other equally, and in exact proportion, therefore is the one more easily seduced by passion than the other. From such separations result polygamy, adulteries, abortions, and every manner of vice, and not only do the erring husband and wife fall into the pit, but they also drag down the manes of their deceased ancestors from the place of beatified mortals, either to hell or back again upon this world.

Fully understanding the way in which such quarrels arise, I have in this book shown how the husband, by varying the enjoyment of his wife, may live with her as with thirty-two different women, ever varying the enjoyment of her, and thus rendering satiety impossible. I have also taught all manner of useful arts and mysteries, by which she can render herself pure, beautiful, and pleasing in his eyes.
